"It's Almost Christmas Time"

Posted by on in Pastor's Blog
“It's Almost Christmas Time”  Can you believe that the Christmas season is almost here?  Where did this year go?  Soon, we will begin pulling our Christmas decorations out of the attic or storage in preparation for the coming season.  I try to do this as soon as Thanksgiving is over because then I have more time to enjoy the fruits of my labor.  Maybe some of you do the same thing.  Well, as you begin to pull out your decorations, would you please consider setting one ornament aside to share with the church this year?  Let me explain… One of the...

“EXTRAVAGANT GENEROSITY”

Posted by on in Pastor's Blog
“EXTRAVAGANT GENEROSITY”  It is the time of year that we begin thinking about our Christian stewardship.  Now, I realize that this is a very unpopular topic in most churches because, let’s face it…none of us really like talking about financial giving.  So this year, instead of completely focusing on the numbers and trying to figure out how it might fit into your budget; I invite you to think about what this church means to you and your family.  Have the various ministries, experiences you have had, and people you have met in this congregation impacted your life or the lives...

Welcome at the Table

Posted by on in Pastor's Blog
“Welcome at the Table”  This past Sunday, we celebrated World Communion Sunday together as a church family.  Of course, we were not alone; people from all corners of the world gathered around the Table of the Lord in their own areas. People with all sorts of experiences.  People who have hardly anything to call their own, and people who have more than they can manage.  People who are rule-followers as well as those who have broken the rules a few times and have suffered the consequences of their actions.  People with various colors of skins, some with body art and...

"Fall is Here"

Posted by on in Pastor's Blog
“Fall is Here!!”  I am sure you have noticed that we are gearing up for a busy fall season here at First Christian Church.  LOGOS is in full swing, and the children (and adults!) are having a blast each Wednesday night.  The men and women are having a great time of fellowship and study at their monthly CMF, CWF, RCF, and the YaYa Sisters Gatherings.  FCC Family is planning a night of fun for our Trunk or Treat event on Wednesday, October 31st  in addition to their monthly gatherings.  Our outreach ministry team is about to start their winter clothing...

The Joys of Ministry

Posted by on in Pastor's Blog
The Joys of Ministry  There are many reasons why I feel so blessed to be a minister.  For example, I love to preach.  I love the entire process.  I love to pray and ask God’s guidance with regards to what to preach.  I love to read and study in preparation for the sermon.  I love the writing process.  I never know what direction God will take me until it is finished.  I love reading back over the sermon on Sunday morning after it has had some time to “gel” in my mind.  God often shows me a little different way...

Turning Over a New Leaf

Posted by on in Pastor's Blog
Turning Over A New Leaf   It is hard to believe that summer is almost over and the fall season has started. With that, I sense a new leaf turning over in the life of the church. Throughout the summer, the church was really quiet during the week with many of the activities that are normally scheduled taking a much needed break; but soon, that will all change. Bible studies are gearing up, and the men and women will begin their monthly gatherings. We will have new opportunities for fellowship and service as a church family. LOGOS will soon begin for...

"Passion vs. Warm Bodies"

Posted by on in Pastor's Blog
“Passion vs. Warm Bodies”  Earlier this year, I started a study on the Book of Revelation.  I found it particularly interesting to read the letters Jesus gave John to give to the seven churches in Asia Minor in chapters 2 and 3 of the book.  Do you know that the modern-day Church is presently struggling with many of the same issues of the ancient church: busyness, idol worship, and the complacency of some…just to name a few?  I guess the old saying is true, “There is nothing new under that sun!”  In Revelation 3:15-16, Jesus said to the Church in...

Thank You

Posted by on in Pastor's Blog
Thank You! As I tried to say on Sunday, Susan and I leave with a heavy mix of emotions:  excitement for another shot at retirement and more time together, yet sadness at not being with a people of faith we have come to love.  You guys just have the most wonderful way of growing on people!  And we are honored to be among them.     My special thanks to Kristi (and Beth) who regularly tolerated my warped sense of humor and misplaced shenanigans, and to each of you for tolerating my missteps in the worship order and my sometimes...

“On the Road to Jerusalem”

Posted by on in Pastor's Blog
The Season of Lent“On the Road to Jerusalem”  It’s hard to believe but the Season of Epiphany is almost over and the Season of Lent is already here.  So your Worship Ministry Team invites you to journey with us on the road Jesus took to Jerusalem and to the most staggering of destinies.  But as we all know, this road and this heavy time for reflection, thought, and confession ends with the wonder of Easter — resurrection, life, and hope.  In calling a settled pastor, such is the future of this church — one of resurrection, life, and hope.  Having...

"Looking Back"

Posted by on in Pastor's Blog
Looking Back  Not long ago, Susan observed from her morning Bible Study that some of the books in the Bible are seldom featured in lectionary readings or sermons.  And she was finding them intriguing, to say the least.  Since her directed readings had taken her into what has long been called “The Minor Prophets,” or what is formally called “The Book of the Twelve” in the Hebrew Bible, I’ve decided to feature at least seven of these books in the short time we have between Epiphany (January 6) and Ash Wednesday (February 14).  So join us in Looking Back at the Eighth, Seventh, and Sixth Century...
