“It's Almost Christmas Time”
Can you believe that the Christmas season is almost here?  Where did this year go?  Soon, we will begin pulling our Christmas decorations out of the attic or storage in preparation for the coming season.  I try to do this as soon as Thanksgiving is over because then I have more time to enjoy the fruits of my labor.  Maybe some of you do the same thing.  Well, as you begin to pull out your decorations, would you please consider setting one ornament aside to share with the church this year?  Let me explain…
One of the joys for me each Christmas is getting to sort through the many Christmas tree ornaments that my family has collected throughout the years.  Each year I get to see the ornament my son made in preschool.  I get to see my mom’s plastic elf ornament that always hung on the bottom of the tree in her home when she was growing up, and on the bottom of the tree in my childhood home while I was growing up, and in more recent years, on the bottom of the tree in our home while our children were growing up.  I get to see the wooden ornaments a friend of mine made for us each year during the five or so years I worked with her.  And I even get to see the dough ornaments my brother and I helped Mom decorate when we were in elementary school.  Each ornament I sort through has a special memory and tells a bit of the story of our life as a family.  Decorating the Christmas tree for me is much more than making it look pretty, it is a stroll down memory lane.
So I had this thought…since we have been focused this year on strengthening our bond and our ministry as individual families joining together as the Church family…wouldn’t it be wonderful to share something from our family trees with our church family?  We will actually have two Christmas trees in the sanctuary this year.  One will hold the beautiful Chrismons that symbolize our faith, and the other will hold ornaments that you and I bring to share with the congregation.  Now do not worry…you WILL get your ornament back!  We are not asking to keep your ornament, we just want to decorate a tree that represents the unity we have as a church family.
We are asking that you please bring an ornament to represent each person in your family, or just one ornament to represent your entire family, whatever you prefer.  During the worship service on Sunday, December 2nd, there will be a time when we will bring our ornaments forward to add it to the church family tree.  If you are not going to be in worship that Sunday, you can always bring it on another Sunday and add it before or after the service.  Will you join me in this new tradition?  See you soon!!
